The Journey began in 1964 by our founder Mr. Douglas L. C. De Silva, when he incorporated the company as Unical (Ceylon) Limited with the joint venture partner Calmic Limited from the United Kingdom. The company manufactured well-known pharmaceutical brands of the time such as CICATRIN and CALPOL, with the former going on to become a household name in Sri Lanka.
Diversification
As a diversification strategy, the company created the Animal Health and Public Health business
units, both supported by an attractive product portfolio representing several globally reputed
veterinary companies such as ZOETIS in addition to manufacturing and marketing its own range
of products at its plant in Ratmalana. The Company is continuously searching for opportunities
to further diversify and expand with the right partnership to synergise opportunities in the
marketplace.
Achievements
We are the pioneers in the manufacture of canine health products in the country and the first company to receive approval from VDCA (Veterinary Drugs Control Authority) for the manufacture of same. Since then we have set up an efficient marketing infrastructure including a dynamic sales and distribution network. Our staff led by an experienced divisional leadership has a close relationship with the targeted customer segment. UNICAL has achieved a sectoral leadership in many segments. It’s quality products portfolio is highly regarded and respected by the Veterinarian community.

The company is proud to position itself as premier supplier of Animal Health products and is the market leader in the small animal biologicals business. It’s efficient and effective distribution model is unique and has the capacity to add more products to underserved segments.

Our sales and distribution model allow our channel partners to be based island wide. We have one of the most experienced field units in the country to represent regionally, in addition to our own direct delivery service to our premium customers to ensure quick response time, accuracy and maintenance of the cold chain. This is something unparalleled in the industry and many of our loyal customers have endorsed this as the gold standard in service.
Current status
With a dedicated and committed team of professionals, our company is consolidating it’s position as a strong player in the country’s pharmaceutical sector both human and animal. The factory is under a major modernization programme to be on par with global regulatory standards and comply with international best practices in manufacturing excellence. This will enable us to not only enhance product and process quality but also step-up capacity to cope up with the anticipated future demand.
